Haley’s Transplant Moved to March 5
Today is February 8th, which should have been Haley’s fourth day on chemotherapy (they have to wipe out her own bone marrow to make room for the new one). But one look at her runny nose and watery eyes, and the doctors felt it was too dangerous to knock out her immune system. So we are back in DC. The new start date is March 5, which coincidentally is also Purim (Jewish holiday that can be summed up like all the other holidays: Someone tried to kill us. We lived. Let’s eat.).
In the meantime, they put a broviac central line into Haley. It’s essentially a permanent IV line that is inserted into the upper chest and is inserted into an artery. This line has to be constantly cared for (the dressing changed and the iv lines flushed every couple of days). I’m not yet proficient at this task, as the site cannot be exposed to air much, for risk of infection, and the first time my sterile gloves snapped in half.
It has been quite a roller coaster ride already– gearing up emotionally, mentally, and intellectually for this procedure that comes with it risk of everything from mild learning disorders to death. And so we wait, and gear up again, and keep in mind that she will never remember this. Anna has been pulled out of school, and we’ve been purelling and cloroxing that there’s not one microbe that dares show its face.

Hi my wonderful children. There is not a minute that goes by without us thinking of you, and on so many different levels. My last visit was so incredible that I came home with so much love and hope that with Hashem’s help everything will work out for the good. Anna is an incredibly bright, fun, creative, warm, funny, and most of all delicious big sister. She loves Haley so much that one can see the care and concern ooze out of her especially when she plays with Haley. She is so gentle and kind when she plays with her as if she senses some kind of something going on but without knowing what it is. I love the way the two of them interact. Haley’s face just lights up with joy when she even anticipates Anna coming close to her. And Haley, what can one say about her? She is the epitome of happiness and “giggles,” with a smile on her face and those engaging blue eyes. In spite of all adversity SHE is the one who gives us strength. Lots of love Mom

To my dear children and beautiful grandchildren.
You are always in our hearts, thoughts and prayers; but, what gives us strength is how you raised two beautiful, funny, happy children; and, the most beautiful grand -daughters in the world.Ms. Fashmooh, aka Anna, and Ms. YifNif, alias Haley, bring us tremendous, unmeasurable joy. What a treat to see meidyy delicious Anna, love, and interact so beautifully, with yummy delicious giggly Haley Jennifer(possibly, Gracie) Well. They are so much fun. Haley loves to play with Anna; and, Anna, rises to the occassion. Anna is already, setting a wonderful example for Haley to follow. As for Purim [jewish holiday], and the Transplant (catchy book title, Tansy; maybe you’ll write a book…As it written, ” ME SH’NICHNAS ADAR, MARBIM B”SIMCHAH!” [those who welcome in the month of adar will be full of joy] May the month of ADAR (and, every other month) truly bring only Simcha [happiness], good health, happiness, to you all. I love you very much. You have given us two, wonderful, happy, beautiful granddaughters. I’m continuing to look forward to keep on spoiling them, to the best of my ability. Love, Kisses, Hugs, Grammy (whose talent lies more with shopping, than writing).

Will you ever get tired of hearing it? That is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen. Haley brings a smile to my face everytime I see the banner! Amazing. I was in Japan when I got your first e-mail telling us about the need for a transplant and now I will be on my way back again when she get’s her transplant. I will be sending my prayers back to you with every ounce of my being. We all think of you constantly and send our love and prayers. We know Haley is surrounded by Hashem, your love and the best medical science available. Could there be a stronger combination? We love you. Aaron, Nechumah, Eliana and Mollie.

Haley is a truly beautiful baby, and her smile and spirit reflect all of the love and support around her. Please know that your friends around the world are thinking of Haley and you every day, and we’re confident that G-d willing, all of you will come through this with flying colors. When that day comes soon with G-d’s help, we look forward to meeting Haley in person and having Abby become friends with such a special, beautiful, playful baby.

Reading the postings on your website this evening, we were overcome by emotion. The beauty of little Haley, the enormity of all you you have to do to fight this illness, the tense anticipation of the transplant … you have captured your feelings and have given your friends and family a window into your hearts and souls. Thanks for sharing Haley’s battle with us. It will help all those who love you make this journey with you. Our prayers are with you all. May Hashem grant Haley a “refuah shelayma” [speedy recovery] and may we be “zocheh” [deserving] to hear her giggles “ad mayah v’esrem shana” [until she is 120 years old-- jewish blessing for a long life].
